Because statistics from national studies document the pandemic problem of cheating that occurs in the nation's high schools and colleges, because academic dishonesty threatens the validity of instruction and assessment in schools and the validity of a diploma or degree, educators need to seek the root causes of academic dishonesty and to develop and implement possible cures. Participants in both high school and college responded to one of four instruments: a survey, an essay written in response to a prompt, an interview, or a focus group.
